Compulsory Games
04:22
|
|||
I don't like you
You don't like me
But we're in this thing together
So we might as well agree
You don't know me
I don't want to know you
It may well be a cliché
But we can't deny it's true
Delete all the emails
And turn off the phones
Fighting off the boredom
That seeps into our bones
Pause and reflect
On what we did today
We just want to go back home
But now we have to play
Compulsory games
Pretend to have fun
You swing and you miss
Trying for a home run
Compulsory games
Mandatory fun
Worthless prizes
Are waiting to be won
It's hard to see, it's hard to breathe
Standing silent in the moonlight
Unhealthy bodies, unhealthy minds
Out on the playing fields at midnight
The food is cold and tasteless
The portions are too small
But the drinks are on the house
And the writing's on the wall
Yes, the writing's on the wall
On the ceiling and the floor. It's
Written there in blood so
We cannot ignore it
Grab the karaoke mic
Sing along to "My Way"
Desperately try
To keep the sadness at bay
Smile for the camera
Smile the pain away
Take another selfie
And now it's time to play
Compulsory games
Pretend to have fun
Dancing to the rhythm
Of a submachine gun
Compulsory games
Mandatory fun
You were stitched up like a kipper
But now you've come undone

Cut the deck, draw the cards
All we be explained
To those who know, to those who seek
By those who are ordained
You planned a celebration
But forgot to invite the guest
Your reach, it far exceeds your grasp
You fail at every test
You're oppressed by time and sorrow
A riddle worthy of a sphinx
And now you have a hangover
Though you haven't had a drink
Surrender is your salvation
Dissolve your pearl in wine
Feel the rock beneath your feet
Its structure and design
Though the waters keep on rising
As if to drown the world
Your alchemy makes manifest
The virtue of that pearl
Although you fall and rise again
You seem to have no aim
You act on impulse, without a plan
It's all a guessing-game
Your universe is transforming
You die a little more each day
But every change is an act of love
If you view it in the right way

The Man Who Laughed Last
02:52
|
|||
I was the man who laughed longest
I was the man who laughed last
My reputation outlives me
An outlaw and an outcast
I signed my name across history
Succeeded against all odds
I waved my red rag at the bull
And woke the sleeping dogs
Fathers and brothers
Sisters and mothers
Lovers and fighters
Husbands and wives
Don't bend your knee
To authority
Take control of your lives
My vision pierced like a needle
And spread like a chestnut tree
A shock to the prim and the straitlaced
The scourge of the bourgeoise
I was the man who laughed loudest
Posterity will testify
And although my body is ashes
My laughter will never die

This Haunted House
03:00
|
|||
This haunted house bears mute witness
To solitude hard to express
A hint of lavender perfume
A phone rings in an empty room
And red wine stains a party dress
There is no wicked sorceress
Or lovely damsel in distress
To rescue from this living tomb,
This haunted house
Alone amid the wilderness
It needs no priest to curse or bless
The grand piano, out of tune
Funeral lilies in full bloom
Nature moves in to repossess
This haunted house

Pink Velvet Walls
03:50
|
|||
Pink velvet walls
No window or door
Just pink velvet walls
Imprisoned once more
I searched and I searched
For an ember or a spark
To shine like a jewel
In the black velvet dark
I toiled and I toiled
Through black velvet night
Til all was revealed
In grey morning light
Pink velvet walls
Warm velvet skin
Pink velvet walls
Closing in
It can't be denied
Mistakes have been made
But the price that was charged
Has gladly been paid
Long auburn hair
Green velvet dress
A love redefined
An ideal made flesh
Soft lights and music
Leather and lace
I remember your name
But forget your face
Now I'm alone
In this pink padded cell
Tried and convicted
When I sought to rebel
Now these walls won't crack
Crumble and fall
Stronger than stone
These pink velvet walls

Where The Summer Ends
02:57
|
|||
Sit down by the river
Watch the river flow
Underneath the railway bridge
Past the old willow
Walk down by the river
To where the river bends
Is this the place? Is this the place
Where the summer ends?
I'm not like my father
No good at working with my hands
Glass and wood and metal
Won't respond to my commands
So I screw some words together
And hammer them into shape
Trying to seal up the cracks
So the meaning won't escape
Many many years ago
In a country far from here
I had a map, I had a plan
It all seemed very clear
But maps can change and plans collapse
And before we realise
We're out of road and out of luck
No more ghosts to exorcise
Now I'm looking through the boxes
Inside this old junk store
Searching for the treasure
I'm almost sure I saw
Among the dust and cobwebs
The illusions will persist
And I'll know them when I see them
That is, if they still exist

Need
04:34
|
|||
here, here’s what you need
everything but the blood you bleed
All that lives in the fear and greed
there, there’s where you are
standing proud like a million miles
have passed you by all cloaked in smiles

Arrogance
04:36
|
|||
you broke the bow and arrow
your mother gave you
you didn’t understand its worth
you split the difference clearly
with all and sundry
no witnesses no birth
gods stand aside and admire your handiwork
you were the childhood glory
the present tense incarnate
you were the one to end them all
and now we look completely
like fool’s gold absolutely
we dig to find nothing at all
gods stand aside and admire your handiwork
i brought a tin piano
i prepped the driver, baby
we have the cover and the tease
all gifts are given freely
there is no retribution
our acquiescence plain to see
gods stand aside and admire your handiwork

Want
05:12
|
|||
from where I am
to where I end
all I want and need
the gap between
the good and bad
the decay, the avenged and the sold
i want
i want
i want
i want
from where I fall
to where I stand
this is my call, my demand
you disappear
you melt away
part of the deal, remains of the day

Repentance
05:24
|
|||
seen, not seen
the go-between
the distance
to the sea
repentance
heard, unheard
a flightless bird
the door
without a key
repentance
broken down
repeat these words
broken down
cut in to thirds
love and guile
trust and fate
stay a while
too late
repentance

Capitulation
05:28
|
|||
our greatest mistakes were not easily won
like lessons we learned in the fire
So open your hands to a secret, a gun
the story begins with a choir
capitulation
all these demands on a daughter, a son
are the fools washed away with the rain?
all that will end was at some point begun
with the holy rejecting their name
capitulation
drunk on a notion and high on a smile
a cheque in the post guaranteed
bloated and full of the murderous mile
yes it’s true that all bleeders will bleed
we cannot say what has led us this way
is it bravery, possibly guile?
all that is left is the soup of the day
full of sentiments, bigots and bile

Remainders
05:04
|
|||
it’s cold here, colder than I’m used to
colder than I’d like to be
in here
it’s quiet here
but I don't mind the quiet here
it gives them a chance to speak to me
in here
what is left of what we had?
to what is good but turning bad
i lose myself in all your pain
until it’s all that will remain
physical things here
they’re running out of time dear
dissolving in my field of vision
in here
disappear
the moments at the end of time
the way you looked at me was clear
what is left of what we had?
to what is good but turning bad
I lose myself in all your pain
until it’s all that will remain
remainders
